Wood usually does not resist abrasions and if fresh water or aquatic organisms will be allowed to penetrate the wood it will be a cause for deterioration. Generally, oak and cedar are selected for wooden boat making, due to its rot resistance characteristic. Woods such as mahogany, okoume and iroko are also being utilized to construct the ship’s hull; however, if you intend to build a boat using these new wood species, you need to take extra attention to make sure that the wood is indeed FSC certified. Normally, the wood is covered by a covering, epoxy for instance.Structural polymer method or the much older West method is being used in epoxy covering.

For beginners, it is ideal to learn the parts of a boat such as: the chines, bow, bulkhead, deck, gunwale, keel, keelson, rudder, sheer, stem, stern, strake and transom. You may search for the definition of each boat part upon deciding if you want to build one. Usually, teak is being used to construct the deck, while keruing, azobe, merbau are used for the beams. You will need glue, screws and/or nails in order to join the wooden components.

Some types of wood construction that amateurs usually apply includes; carvel, which involves attaching wooden planks to a frame to form a smooth hull; lapstrake is a technique wherein wooden planks are fixed to each other with a slight overlap that is beveled for a firm fit; strip planking method is mostly preferred by amateurs in wooden boat making since it is fast, avoids complicated temporary jig work and shaping of the planks are not required.

Wooden Boats: Better or not

There are so many materials available to make the boat of, and yet over the ages and even now, wooden boats are indeed acclaimed as some of the better boats that there are. There are a few reasons for this, and it is not without reason that wood reigns as the material par excellence for boat building. For one, if you consider the strength of the material, you will be amazed to know that wood is stronger for its weight than steel, fiberglass and aluminum. Sure, you can get very strong steel, aluminum or fiberglass, but it would be so heavy that it would just not float. After all, a boat needs to float.

Wood is quite lightweight too and is excellent for flotation. True it can rot somewhat, but if you use some epoxy and fiberglass at the bottom of the boat, it would weather the elements quite effectively and last well for many years indeed. There is no wonder why over the ages, wood has been used extensively for boat building. You can easily fashion wood into a floating vessel that can give you joy and pleasure for many years to come, justifying the use of boat as an excellent boat building material. Finally you must remember that decent boat design software helps you to build the boat of your dreams.

4 Stroke Outboard Motors

A general difference between 2 stroke and 4 stroke engines is weight of a similar horse powered engines. 4-strokes are likely to be heavier than a 2-stroke engine of similar horse power. A 2-Stroke engine uses a gas and oil combination, whereas a 4-stroke burns gasoline. A 4-stroke engine is more similar to a car engine including an oil filter and usually has lower torque than 2-strokes.

Features of 4-Stroke

  • Small emissions & meet up all state standards
  • Exceptional fuel economy
  • Physically powerful top end and good quality acceleration
  • Generates less Sounds
  • Electronic ignition systems
  • Engine management systems
  • Here the oil is added to the engine rather than the fuel allowing for clean and efficient fuel consumption
